The global car market faces a number of challenges, including supply issues, delivery delays, and a shortage of many newer makes and models. Whether you're looking to buy your first car on the scheme, choose your next car, or you're waiting for delivery, we understand that you may be wondering what's causing the current delivery delays, and what you can do if the car you have ordered is affected.
We've pulled together the answers to a few of the more common questions you might have regarding the delivery timescales of cars you have ordered or are thinking of buying. We will try to answer any specific questions you have about the delivery timescales of a car you have ordered, so please contact us directly.
The main issue affecting new car supply is a global shortage of semiconductors, or ‘chips’. These chips act as the ‘brain’ of many electrical items, including washing machines, home computers, TVs and new cars.
High demand for electrical items during COVID-19 led to a shortage of semiconductors that is expected to continue well into 2023. On top of this, factories across the world are continuing to be affected by staff shortages due to COVID-19 isolation requirements and wider supply chain problems caused by the pandemic.
These supply chain issues can often mean that vehicles in production are unable to be completed due to delayed parts leading to further delays and changing delivery dates. In many cases cars are taking more than six months to be delivered.
Although we are working hard to keep the Motability Scheme as affordable as possible, you will have noticed that there are fewer cars to purchase before the pandemic and Advance Payments may be higher than previous years.
Manufacturers are also removing vehicles from the Motability Scheme, sometimes at very short notice and due to the complex factors involved in new car supplies, struggle to get reliable information on delivery dates.

If you are looking to order a new car on the Motability Scheme, visit our Motability Offers page which has the most up to date information for the cars currently available on the Scheme, then contact your local Motability Specialist who should be able to give you an idea of the current delivery times for your chosen model. They won’t be able to speed things up when you do order and information regarding cars being built and delivered may change.
You can create a Motability Scheme online account today and update your personal details, allowance information and add details for two of your named drivers all before you visit our dealerships.
Having this account ready will mean that the dealer to dedicate more time to helping you choose the right car, we are more than happy to assist you in setting up this account and will be able to give you some tips as to the best information to enter.
The first thing to do is decide which car would suit you best, take a look at our current range of Motability Scheme vehicles, then contact us immediately as our brands, along with ALL other manufacturers are experiencing delays and we will check the expected delivery times for your chosen model.
If you already have a vehicle on the Motability Scheme, you will be able to order your next car 3 months before your current lease ends and if you are reaching the last 3 months of your lease, we highly recommend that you visit our Motability Offers Page or contact our Motability Specialist as soon as possible to get the neccesary advice you need to get your order completed.
The first thing you should do is speak to one of our Motability specialist and they will be able to advise you on what models suit your requirements and are also available to test drive.
If that particular vehicle isnt available to test drive immediately we will do our utmost to try and find a vehicle for you to test drive so you can be sure that the model you have selected is right for you and your families needs over the next 3 years.
Due to the current supply issues you may be considering cancelling your order to look for another car somewhere else but we we would advise you to speak to your Motability Specialist directly to discuss this as this issue is affecting every manufacturer across the whole industry so would mean you will have to start again and re-order which could mean you wait as long, if not longer, for your chosen vehicle.
Motability price lists are updated every three months with the new prices published at the start of every January, April, July and October.
The Motability Scheme operate a price guarantee which means that the Advance Payment of the car that your ordered and is accepted will not change, even if the prices change whilst you are waiting for the car to be delivered.
Unfortunately it is very possible that the expected delivery date may change more than once during the build process. The manufacturers are constantly updating build dates and delivery timeframes and these changes are something we cannot have any effect over.
As an existing customer, if the delivery date changes for you we will make sure we contact you in plenty of time to confirm that your lease has been extended and will be continually extended to ensure you have a vehicle availble to you to carry on with your normal life.
If you cannot order your next car by the end of your current lease, your lease will be automatically extend for six months to allow you more time to do this. A new Certificate of Motor Insurance or temporary cover note from RSA Motability (RSAM) for this period will then be sent to you.
This will be automatically done for you so no need to contact us.
During this six-month lease extension you are free to order your new car which will mean your car is in the build chain and then we can keep you updated as to the progress of your vehicle.
You MAY be able to extend your current lease for another one or two years, if for example your current vehicle has low mileage and if this is applicable to you you may be able to extend your current lease in the ‘Current lease’ section of the Motability Scheme online account, which we are happy to assist you with.

We’ll also include details of your options in the letter we send to you around three months before the end of your lease.
If your next vehicle order is delayed and it looks like there will be delays in delivering your new vehicle before the end of your current lease, we can arrange for the lease on your current vehicle to be extended. As part of this process we will also extend your insurance, breakdown cover and the other aspects of your worry-free package, so you shouldn’t notice any difference with your lease.
To ensure this happens smoothly an MOT must be completed on your vehicle by your original lease end date, if this hasn't happened your lease will not be extended. Your Motability Specialist should be in touch to arrange this, but please contact them directly if your test is due and you have not heard from them. If you are unsure when your MOT is due, you can check this at gov.uk/check-mot-history
Even if you've already had your lease extended we can extend it again, you will just need to arrange for another MOT to be done and if neccessary a service completed so your vehicle is ready to be handed back when your new car is ready for delivery.
Please be reassured that the Motability Scheme will cover the costs of any MOT or servicing as well as any associated repairs due to general wear and tear, even in a lease extension.
You can place an order at any point during your current lease extension and we can assist and advise you on this.
If your lease is extended, we will also extend your insurance cover with RSA Motability (RSAM). You shouldn’t notice any changes with your insurance policy and will receive a new Certificate of Motor Insurance from RSAM to confirm that your insurance cover has been extended. These are usually issued for a period of six months as standard.
You shouldn't notice any changes in your maintenance or repairs routine if you have extended your lease including tyre repair and replacement.
Your RAC breakdown cover will also be extended.
RSAM will communicate with you throughout your claim, advising you on any delays that are possible and keeping you informed of the progress and availablity of parts required.
The amount of courtesy cars we have are also being impacted by the ongoing supply issues. The number of vehicles we have available, the size and type of vehicle we can offer, and how quickly we can get a vehicle to you are all being affected.
This means it may take longer to get a suitable courtesy car than you have previously experienced, and it’s unlikely we’ll be able to meet requests for specific features.
Please be reassured if it isn’t possible to provide you with a temporary replacement vehicle for any reason, RSAM will contact you to discuss alternative arrangements.
